Oh, it's some rhinos...
So, I've been feeling quite dry creatively lately and it hasn't been doing me any good at all. I'm depressed about work stuff, so I need the creative side of me to keep me from getting too melancholy. So, I decided to re-read Brenda Ueland's If You Want to Write for inspiration. It's not just a book about writing (I know jb has read this book, so she knows about it), but the arts and the creative spirit, in general. I find it quite inspiring and it has been good to read it again. In fact, I'm getting much more out of it than when I read it in my 20's. In an early chapter of the book, she discusses Van Gogh and how he felt, one evening, compelled to draw a picture of the twilight sky and send it to his brother Theo because he wanted to share with him the beauty that he saw in it. She goes on to describe this as a "feeling of love and enthusiasm for something, and in a direct, simple, passionate and true way, you try to show this beauty in things to others, by drawing it." I found this quite lovely and definitely could relate to the idea. Yes, a big part of the reason why I draw is just selfish (because I love it), but I also want to share my interpretation of what I find beautiful with others. Yes, here is my dramatic blog moment of the day. I hope it doesn't make you feel too nauseous;) Above is my afternoon drawing. Nothing too exciting, but at least I did sit down and draw. These guys and the recent elephants are the only bits of work I've done in ages. I'm hoping to do something in color tonight, but maybe that is a bit ambitious for me at the moment. We'll see...
Anyway, back down on earth, I was at Target today and I bought a small bag of Archer Farm's dill pickle flavored cashews. I couldn't help myself--I just had to try them. They really are quite tasty.

your post hit home with me. yes it did. i am glad you are finding some comfort in Brenda's book. I did too when I read it a few months back and perhaps think I should pick it up again now. keep drawing. i love the rhinos and your drawings to provide great joy to others---including me---I heart them very much : )
and by the way, I am not nauseous hearing your words about creativity (in fact I am quite touched) but on the other hand....the idea of dill pickle flavored cashews does make me a tinge sick : )
Keep drawing. color or not. I will look forward to seeing something more soon.
Sorry too about work. very sorry.
Hi Anne - Just a quick drop-in to see your blog cause we have company and they are taking up way too much of my blog time!
I think it's beautiful that you are sharing your art with us on the blog. Please don't stop.
I showed my mousepad with The Three Amigos to my friend who is here and she loved it. It must be fun to be so creative....both in your art and guitar playing. I heart both. I really like this drawing. It has been awhile since I've seen one in living color though and would greatly enjoy that. Thanks in advance for sharing.
